Unlock Your Trade Potential

Streamline Your TRA Skills Assessment

Fast-track your qualifications with our efficient skills recognition process, designed for experienced tradespeople.

Start Your Assessment

Applying for the TSS or OSAP Program

To apply for the TSS Program, you must engage a TRA-approved registered training organisation. Trade Skills Australia is authorised to conduct trade skills assessments under this program.

Your application is lodged through the TRA Online Portal. You will need to register via the portal, create a username and password, and make the initial payment as part of your application. The online system manages the formal lodgement; Trade Skills Australia manages the assessment process.

Before you apply

Do not submit an application if you do not yet have the required documentation, ready.

Applications where the applicant does not attend their assessment on the confirmed date and time may be withdrawn, and any fees already paid may be forfeited.

Decision-ready applications

All applications must be decision ready at the time of submission. This means:

  • all mandatory fields in the TRA Online Portal are completed
  • all required documents are uploaded as instructed
  • the mandatory fee has been paid

Incomplete or poorly prepared applications will delay the assessment process and may be withdrawn.

Using an agent or representative

You may nominate a migration agent or representative to act on your behalf. This is done during your online registration in the TRA Online Portal by completing the “Agent or Representative” section.

Even if you use an agent, you remain responsible for the accuracy and completeness of your application.

Choosing Trade Skills Australia as your RTO

You are required to nominate a TRA-approved RTO to conduct your skills assessment. When selecting Trade Skills Australia, you will work directly with our team throughout the assessment process.

Once you have nominated us, we will:

Confirm your eligibility

Our RPL service allows experienced tradespeople to convert their skills into formal qualifications without the need for traditional classroom training.

Explain the assessment pathway that applies to your trade

We offer assessments for various automotive roles, including Automotive Electrician, Light Vehicle Mechanic, and more, ensuring your skills are formally recognized.

Outline the evidence you must provide

Our engineering assessments cover specializations such as Boilermaking, Welding, and Mechanical Fitting, providing you with the credentials to advance in your field.

Fees for TSS Program skills assessments are paid through the TRA Online Portal. Before making payment, you must contact Trade Skills Australia to obtain the correct RTO Assessment Payment Identifier Code for the service you require.

Document requirements

To proceed with your assessment, we must verify the authenticity, validity, and relevance of all documents submitted. Your application cannot be assessed until all required documentation has been received in the correct format.

You’ll need to provide clear, full-colour scans of the following:

Current passport or other government-issued photo identification.

If you have completed formal training or hold overseas trade qualifications, provide copies of your certificates and academic transcripts.

You must demonstrate that you have the practical skills and employment history required for your nominated trade.
Evidence may include:

  • Training records
  • Workplace logbooks
  • Employer references

Any document not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Translations must be completed by an accredited translator and include their certification details.

Applying for Pathway 2?

You must nominate a TRA-approved RTO to conduct your skills assessment. When you select Trade Skills Australia, we work with you directly through the Pathway 2 assessment process and explain what is required at each stage. Applicants for OSAP and TSS Pathway 2 self-refer to their chosen provider.

Once you have nominated us, we will:

Confirm whether Pathway 2 is right for you

We assess whether you meet the Pathway 2 requirements based on your relevant Australian qualification or current unrestricted Australian occupational licence, along with your trade and employment background.

Explain the documents you need to provide

We tell you exactly what documentary evidence is required for your application, including identity, skills and employment evidence, so your submission is ready for assessment. Pathway 2 requires decision-ready documentary evidence.

Guide you through to the technical assessment

Pathway 2 includes a technical interview and review of supporting evidence to assess whether you can perform the full range of tasks expected in your nominated occupation in Australia. Evidence from employers or referees may also be considered.

All Fees and Payments are paid through the TRA Online Portal. Before making payment, you must contact Trade Skills Australia to obtain the correct RTO Assessment Payment Identifier Code for the service you require.

Got Questions?

Common Questions About
the TRA Process

TRA offers a number of different skills assessment programs based on your occupation, country of passport, where you studied and the type of visa you wish to apply for. Different skills assessment programs have different eligibility requirements in relation to the evidence needed to support your application.

For assistance finding an assessment type to best suit you, try the Skills Assessment tool.

We offer nationally recognised trade qualifications across Automotive, Engineering and Hospitality. This includes roles such as Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Fitter, Metal Fabricator, Welder, Machinist, Chef and Cook, and more. All qualifications are delivered via Recognition of Prior Learning; meaning your existing skills and experience are assessed against Australian standards.

You can submit your evidence through our RPL Evidence Portal. Our team will guide you through the documentation and assessment stages.

The RPL process involves evaluating your existing skills and experience to grant you a nationally recognised qualification without the need for traditional classroom training.

The assessment timeframe can vary depending on the TRA program you apply through, the qualification being assessed, and how quickly you provide the required evidence. In most cases, the process takes several weeks once a complete application and all supporting documents have been submitted. Delays may occur if additional evidence or clarification is required during the assessment.

Testimonials

Success Stories from Our Clients

A seamless RPL experience

Mitchell Candy

Had the pleasure of working with Dave Taylor during my skills assessment process, and I can confidently say he went above and beyond. From the start, Dave was incredibly professional, organized, and on the ball with every detail. He communicated clearly, was easy to talk to, and made the whole process stress-free.

What stood out most was his approachable personality—he wasn’t just professional, he was genuinely engaging. We even had a great conversation about car racing, which added a personal touch that made the experience even more enjoyable.

Achieved my qualification with ease

Jonathon Weaver

The team at Trade Skills Australia were a pleasure to work with converting my New Zealand Trade into the equivalent Australian Trade. This has opened many more doors for me and my career here in Australia.

The RPL process was exceptionally thorough but with effective communications with the friendly staff with any questions I may had, the process was completed hassle free!

Thanks again Milli and Russell!
