Applying for the OSAP Program

To apply for the OSAP Program, you must engage a TRA-approved registered training organisation. Trade Skills Australia is authorised to conduct trade skills assessments under this program.

Your application is lodged through the TRA Online Portal. You will need to register via the portal, create a username and password, and make the initial payment as part of your application. The online system manages the formal lodgement; Trade Skills Australia manages the assessment process.

What is the OSAP Skills Assessment?

The Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) is required for certain trade occupations applying for skilled migration to Australia.

The assessment verifies that your skills, qualifications, and work experience meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation.

For eligible trade occupations, the assessment is conducted through Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) under the OSAP pathway, which includes a technical assessment of your practical skills and knowledge.

Trade Skills Australia (TSA) conducts OSAP assessments as a TRA-approved Registered Training Organisation, managing the assessment process and verifying competency against Australian industry benchmarks.

The Role of Trade Skills Australia

Our role is to conduct a formal RPL assessment to determine whether your existing skills and experience meet the requirements for the Australian qualification linked to your trade occupation.

This assessment forms part of the TRA skills assessment pathway required for migration purposes.

TSA assessors review evidence such as:

  • Employment history
  • Trade experience
  • Work references
  • Photos or videos of your work
  • Technical documentation or project evidence
If required, additional evidence or verification may be requested during the assessment process.

Who Needs an OSAP Skills Assessment?

You may require an OSAP Skills Assessment if:

Your occupation is a trade occupation listed by TRA

Our OSAP assessments cover a wide range of TRA-approved trade occupations, ensuring your skills are assessed against current Australian industry standards for your nominated role.

You are applying for a skilled migration visa that requires an OSAP assessment

We deliver OSAP assessments aligned with TRA requirements, supporting applicants across key trade areas and helping ensure your skills meet migration criteria.

You obtained your skills outside Australia

OSAP is designed for internationally trained tradespeople, assessing your existing skills and experience to determine equivalency with Australian qualifications.

You do not hold an Australian trade qualification

Through OSAP, your practical experience and competency are assessed against Australian benchmarks, providing a pathway to formal recognition without undertaking full training.

The requirement depends on the specific occupation and visa conditions set by the Department of Home Affairs.

Applicants should confirm their visa requirements before beginning the assessment process.

How the Process Works:

Initial Application

Submit your application with Trade Skills Australia including personal details, nominated occupation, and employment history.

Evidence Submission

Provide documentation that demonstrates your trade experience and competency. Typical evidence includes:

  • Employment references
  • Payslips, Employer Statements or contracts
  • Work photographs
  • Qualification certificates (if applicable)
  • Identification documents

Technical Assessment (if required)

Depending on your occupation, you may be required to complete a practical skills assessment, technical interview, or both, as part of the OSAP pathway.

Assessment Review & Outcome

A qualified TSA assessor reviews your evidence and assessment results against Australian standards for your occupation. Once completed, the outcome is issued in line with TRA requirements.

Got Questions?

Common Questions About
the TRA Process

TRA offers a number of different skills assessment programs based on your occupation, country of passport, where you studied and the type of visa you wish to apply for. Different skills assessment programs have different eligibility requirements in relation to the evidence needed to support your application.

For assistance finding an assessment type to best suit you, try the Skills Assessment tool.

We offer nationally recognised trade qualifications across Automotive, Engineering and Hospitality. This includes roles such as Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Fitter, Metal Fabricator, Welder, Machinist, Chef and Cook, and more. All qualifications are delivered via Recognition of Prior Learning; meaning your existing skills and experience are assessed against Australian standards.

You can submit your evidence through our RPL Evidence Portal. Our team will guide you through the documentation and assessment stages.

The RPL process involves evaluating your existing skills and experience to grant you a nationally recognised qualification without the need for traditional classroom training.

The assessment timeframe can vary depending on the TRA program you apply through, the qualification being assessed, and how quickly you provide the required evidence. In most cases, the process takes several weeks once a complete application and all supporting documents have been submitted. Delays may occur if additional evidence or clarification is required during the assessment.

A seamless RPL experience

Mitchell Candy

Had the pleasure of working with Dave Taylor during my skills assessment process, and I can confidently say he went above and beyond. From the start, Dave was incredibly professional, organized, and on the ball with every detail. He communicated clearly, was easy to talk to, and made the whole process stress-free.

What stood out most was his approachable personality—he wasn’t just professional, he was genuinely engaging. We even had a great conversation about car racing, which added a personal touch that made the experience even more enjoyable.
