RPL Certificate in Engineering

Are you an experienced engineer or tradesperson in the engineering field but lack formal qualifications? Through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), you can turn your real-world skills into a nationally recognised engineering certificate, without having to study again.
Whether you’ve gained your expertise through hands-on work in fabrication, machining, welding, or plant mechanics, the RPL process evaluates your existing knowledge and experience against Australian industry standards. If you meet the requirements, you can fast-track your path to certification.

At Trade Skills Australia, we specialise in helping engineering professionals just like you get qualified quickly, affordably, and with confidence. Start your RPL journey today and gain the credentials you need to unlock better job opportunities, secure higher pay, or meet industry compliance.

What Is an RPL Certificate in Engineering?

An RPL Certificate in Engineering is a nationally recognised qualification awarded through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), a process that assesses your existing engineering skills and experience against formal training standards.
If you’ve been working in roles such as boilermaker, welder, machinist, fitter, or plant mechanic, but never completed a formal Australian qualification, RPL allows you to gain certification without studying from scratch.

The process involves gathering evidence of your hands-on experience, such as work samples, references, licences, or employment history. This is reviewed by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and if your competencies align with the standards of a Certificate III trade qualification, you’ll be issued the certificate.

RPL Eligibility Criteria for Engineering

To successfully complete the RPL process and obtain your engineering trade qualification, you'll need to provide reliable and verifiable evidence that demonstrates your skills, knowledge, and industry experience.

The purpose of the assessment is to confirm that your real-world workplace experience meets the requirements of a nationally recognised Australian qualification - without needing to complete a traditional apprenticeship or classroom- based training program.

Typical Evidence May Include:
Employment history and resume
  • Documents that show your time working in the trade, including the employers you have worked for, your job titles, duties performed, and length of employment. Proof of paid employment
  • Evidence that confirms you were employed and received payment for your work, such as payslips, employment contracts, tax records, or employer references. Workplace evidence
  • Evidence demonstrating the application of your skills and knowledge in a real, functioning workplace environment. This may include photos, videos, job sheets, reports, fabrication work, welding projects, machining tasks, maintenance work, or other engineering activities you have personally completed. Licences, tickets, and training records
  • Any relevant licences, high-risk tickets, inductions, short courses, or previous training completed — including qualifications or records obtained outside Australia. Supporting documents and references
  • Employer references, supervisor testimonials, logbooks, portfolios, or other documentation that supports your competency and industry experience. If you are unsure what evidence is acceptable, our team will guide you through the process and explain exactly what is required for your specific trade and qualification.

01

Submit Your Skills Evidence

Once confirmed, you’ll be guided to submit evidence that proves your competency. This may include:
  • Resume and job descriptions
  • Photos or videos of your work
  • References from employers or colleagues
  • Certificates or licences
  • Project documents, blueprints, or reports
We’ll help you gather and format your documentation to meet the standards of the relevant engineering trade qualification.

RPL Eligibility Criteria for Engineering

To successfully complete the RPL process and earn your engineering trade certificate, you’ll need to provide reliable, verifiable evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience.

The goal is to show that your knowledge and hands-on abilities meet the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification – without traditional study.

Common Documents You’ll Need:

Work history and resume

Include detailed timelines of your employment in engineering roles, including job titles and duties.

Job descriptions

These help map your responsibilities to the specific units of competency in the qualification.

Photos and videos of work completed

Visual evidence of your skills in action – fabrication, welding, machining, or plant repairs – can strongly support your application.

Certificates, licences, or training records

Even if issued outside Australia, prior credentials can strengthen your case.

Reports, testimonials, or portfolios

Any documents that show your ability to manage tasks, solve problems, or complete engineering projects.

If you’re unsure about what qualifies as acceptable evidence, our team will guide you through the process and help you gather the right documents.
