Applying for the TSS Program

To apply for the TSS Program, you must engage a TRA-approved registered training organisation. Trade Skills Australia is authorised to conduct trade skills assessments under this program.

Your application is lodged through the TRA Online Portal. You will need to register via the portal, create a username and password, and make the initial payment as part of your application. The online system manages the formal lodgement; Trade Skills Australia manages the assessment process.

What is the TSS Skills Assessment?

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Skills Assessment is required for certain trade occupations applying for the Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482).

The assessment verifies that your skills, qualifications, and work experience match Australian standards for your nominated occupation.

For many trade occupations, the assessment is conducted through Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) using an RPL assessment completed by an approved Registered Training Organisation.

Trade Skills Australia (TSA) conducts these assessments on behalf of applicants as the RTO responsible for the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

The Role of Trade Skills Australia

Our role is to conduct a formal RPL assessment to determine whether your existing skills and experience meet the requirements for the Australian qualification linked to your trade occupation.

This assessment forms part of the TRA skills assessment pathway required for migration purposes.

TSA assessors review evidence such as:

  • Employment history
  • Trade experience
  • Work references
  • Photos or videos of your work
  • Technical documentation or project evidence
If required, additional evidence or verification may be requested during the assessment process.

Who Needs a TSS Skills Assessment?

You may require a TSS Skills Assessment if:

  • Your occupation is a trade occupation listed by TRA
  • You are applying for a Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa
  • You obtained your skills outside Australia
  • You do not hold an Australian trade qualification

The requirement depends on the specific occupation and visa conditions set by the Department of Home Affairs.

Applicants should confirm their visa requirements before beginning the assessment process.

How the Process Works:

Initial Application

Submit your application with Trade Skills Australia including personal details, occupation, and employment history.

Evidence Submission

Provide documentation that demonstrates your trade experience and competency.
Typical evidence includes:

  • Employment references
  • Payslips or contracts
  • Work photographs
  • Qualification certificates (if applicable)
  • Identification documents

Assessment Review & Outcome

A qualified TSA assessor reviews your evidence against the requirements of the relevant Australian qualification. Once the assessment is completed, the outcome is issued as part of the TRA assessment process.

Fees for TSS Program skills assessments are paid through the TRA Online Portal. Before making payment, you must contact Trade Skills Australia to obtain the correct RTO Assessment Payment Identifier Code for the service you require.

Evidence Requirements

To complete the RPL assessment, applicants generally need to provide evidence that confirms:

  • Length of employment
  • Type of work performed
  • Trade skills and technical ability
  • Common evidence includes:
  • Employer reference letters
  • Payslips or tax documents
  • Work photos or videos
  • Job descriptions
  • Previous trade certificates

Assessment timeframes depend on:

  • Completeness of your application
  • Quality of submitted evidence
  • Verification requirements

Applicants should allow adequate time for the assessment before lodging visa applications.

Got Questions?

Common Questions About
the TRA Process

TRA offers a number of different skills assessment programs based on your occupation, country of passport, where you studied and the type of visa you wish to apply for. Different skills assessment programs have different eligibility requirements in relation to the evidence needed to support your application.

For assistance finding an assessment type to best suit you, try the Skills Assessment tool.

We offer nationally recognised trade qualifications across Automotive, Engineering and Hospitality. This includes roles such as Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Fitter, Metal Fabricator, Welder, Machinist, Chef and Cook, and more. All qualifications are delivered via Recognition of Prior Learning; meaning your existing skills and experience are assessed against Australian standards.

You can submit your evidence through our RPL Evidence Portal. Our team will guide you through the documentation and assessment stages.

The RPL process involves evaluating your existing skills and experience to grant you a nationally recognised qualification without the need for traditional classroom training.

The assessment timeframe can vary depending on the TRA program you apply through, the qualification being assessed, and how quickly you provide the required evidence. In most cases, the process takes several weeks once a complete application and all supporting documents have been submitted. Delays may occur if additional evidence or clarification is required during the assessment.
