Applying for the TSS Program
To apply for the TSS Program, you must engage a TRA-approved registered training organisation. Trade Skills Australia is authorised to conduct trade skills assessments under this program.
Your application is lodged through the TRA Online Portal. You will need to register via the portal, create a username and password, and make the initial payment as part of your application. The online system manages the formal lodgement; Trade Skills Australia manages the assessment process.

Who Needs a TSS Skills Assessment?
You may require a TSS Skills Assessment if:
- Your occupation is a trade occupation listed by TRA
- You are applying for a Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa
- You obtained your skills outside Australia
- You do not hold an Australian trade qualification
The requirement depends on the specific occupation and visa conditions set by the Department of Home Affairs.
Applicants should confirm their visa requirements before beginning the assessment process.
How the Process Works:
Fees for TSS Program skills assessments are paid through the TRA Online Portal. Before making payment, you must contact Trade Skills Australia to obtain the correct RTO Assessment Payment Identifier Code for the service you require.

Common Questions About
the TRA Process
What program should I apply for?
TRA offers a number of different skills assessment programs based on your occupation, country of passport, where you studied and the type of visa you wish to apply for. Different skills assessment programs have different eligibility requirements in relation to the evidence needed to support your application.
For assistance finding an assessment type to best suit you, try the Skills Assessment tool.
What qualifications can I obtain through TSA?
We offer nationally recognised trade qualifications across Automotive, Engineering and Hospitality. This includes roles such as Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Fitter, Metal Fabricator, Welder, Machinist, Chef and Cook, and more. All qualifications are delivered via Recognition of Prior Learning; meaning your existing skills and experience are assessed against Australian standards.
How do I submit evidence for RPL?
You can submit your evidence through our RPL Evidence Portal. Our team will guide you through the documentation and assessment stages.
What is the RPL process?
The RPL process involves evaluating your existing skills and experience to grant you a nationally recognised qualification without the need for traditional classroom training.
How long does the assessment process take?
The assessment timeframe can vary depending on the TRA program you apply through, the qualification being assessed, and how quickly you provide the required evidence. In most cases, the process takes several weeks once a complete application and all supporting documents have been submitted. Delays may occur if additional evidence or clarification is required during the assessment.
