Fast-track your qualifications with our efficient skills recognition process, designed for experienced tradespeople.

TSS & OSAP Program Selector
To apply for the TSS Program, you must engage a TRA-approved registered training organisation. Trade Skills Australia is authorised to conduct trade skills assessments under this program.
Your application is lodged through the TRA Online Portal. You will need to register via the portal, create a username and password, and make the initial payment as part of your application. The online system manages the formal lodgement; Trade Skills Australia manages the assessment process.
TRA Occupation Selector
Use the selector below to identify the most relevant next step based on your occupation, country of passport, and current work experience. This tool has been designed to provide general guidance on whether your background may align more closely with Pathway 1, Pathway 2, or an RPL-first option through Trade Skills Australia.
If your occupation or passport country does not align with a listed TRA pathway, the selector will direct you to the most appropriate Trade Skills Australia next step. Where applicable, this may mean beginning with RPL so your existing skills and experience can be assessed and mapped toward a suitable qualification outcome.
Once you complete the selector, you will be shown the most relevant next step and, where appropriate, directed to our Get Started form so our team can review your details and assist you further.

Common Questions About
the TRA Process
What program should I apply for?
TRA offers a number of different skills assessment programs based on your occupation, country of passport, where you studied and the type of visa you wish to apply for. Different skills assessment programs have different eligibility requirements in relation to the evidence needed to support your application.
For assistance finding an assessment type to best suit you, try the Skills Assessment tool.
What qualifications can I obtain through TSA?
We offer nationally recognised trade qualifications across Automotive, Engineering and Hospitality. This includes roles such as Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Fitter, Metal Fabricator, Welder, Machinist, Chef and Cook, and more. All qualifications are delivered via Recognition of Prior Learning; meaning your existing skills and experience are assessed against Australian standards.
How do I submit evidence for RPL?
You can submit your evidence through our RPL Evidence Portal. Our team will guide you through the documentation and assessment stages.
What is the RPL process?
The RPL process involves evaluating your existing skills and experience to grant you a nationally recognised qualification without the need for traditional classroom training.
How long does the assessment process take?
The assessment timeframe can vary depending on the TRA program you apply through, the qualification being assessed, and how quickly you provide the required evidence. In most cases, the process takes several weeks once a complete application and all supporting documents have been submitted. Delays may occur if additional evidence or clarification is required during the assessment.
