So, you’ve been working in your trade for years, have the skills and knowledge under your belt – but no formal qualification to show for it? You’re not alone. A lot of people across Australia are in the same boat, and that’s where Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) comes in.
If you’re ready to take that next step, this is your RPL step-by-step guide – written to make it easy to understand the process and know exactly what to do next.
What is RPL?
Before we jump into how to apply for RPL in Australia, let’s quickly cover what RPL actually is.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that lets you turn your existing skills, knowledge, and work experience into a nationally recognised qualification. Whether you’ve worked in the industry locally or overseas, RPL helps formalise your experience so you don’t have to start from scratch.
Who Can Apply? RPL Eligibility in Australia
Not sure if you qualify? Here’s what you need to know about RPL eligibility in Australia.
You may be eligible for RPL if:
- You have three (3) years time in trade. Your experience level must meet the requirements of the qualification you are seeking.
- You can supply sufficient evidence to demonstrate you have experience working at trade level. (e.g. work samples, references, job cards, work orders)
If that sounds like you – you’re likely a great candidate for RPL.
The RPL Application Process in Australia: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Start with a free consultation. This is where we chat about your goals, experience, and what qualification you’re aiming for. We’ll let you know if RPL is the right path and which qualifications you’re likely to achieve. You can submit your details for the consultation via the ‘Get Started’ section of our website.
Step 2: Evidence Collection
Here’s where we gather the documentation to support your RPL claim.
- Upload your identification, resume, and make your Qualification selection in the portal.
- Complete your enrolment form and self-assessment questionnaire.
- Upload your workplace and training evidence, and any other relevant qualifications or certificates.
- Indicate your core and elective units.
Once you’ve uploaded everything, it enters the official RPL assessment process. An assessor will review your documents against the qualification requirements. If accepted, your first invoice will be issued.
Don’t stress – we have some super helpful downloads that will guide you through the process. Download them here.
Step 3: RPL Assessment Process
Once we verify your first invoice payment, we begin compliance verification. This involves confirming your employment and referee details. Then, we’ll issue your second invoice.
Step 4: Technical Assessment
After verifying your second payment, your Assessor will contact you via email to schedule a virtual meeting and begin the technical assessment stage.
Step 5: Qualification Issued
Once your Technical Interview is successfully completed and compliance is confirmed, your Australian Qualification is issued. This nationally recognised qualification is equivalent to completing the full course – but saves you time and money.
Why RPL is Worth It
Getting qualified through RPL opens the door to better job opportunities, higher pay, and greater job security. It also:
- Helps with visa applications or immigration pathways
- Meets licensing or compliance requirements
- Allows you to start your own business
- Gives you a real sense of achievement and recognition
