Assessment

Darren Snell

Automotive Assessor

Hi, I’m Darren, an Assessor at Trade Skills Australia with more than 25 years of experience across the automotive, engineering and transport industries. My background includes light vehicle mechanics, automotive electrical, mechanical fitting, fabrication and welding, industrial hydraulics, heavy vehicle modifications and material handling equipment.

I started my career in a vehicle restoration workshop, working on everything from early classic cars to late-model sports and race cars. I later moved into fabrication, manufacturing and specialised transport, progressing into leading hand and supervisory roles. A significant part of my experience involved working with engineers to design, fabricate, install and modify wheelchair-accessible vehicles, heavy vehicles, semi-trailers and material handling equipment for specialised transport and operational applications.

I’ve worked across multiple trades and industries, including emergency breakdowns supporting heavy transport fleets, disability transport services, supermarkets and distribution centres across regional and interstate locations. My experience has taken me into workshops, factories, mine sites and depots, working with a wide range of vehicles, machinery and equipment. Having performed the work firsthand, I bring practical knowledge of the tasks, tools and skills used across the trades I assess.

I hold Certificate III qualifications in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Automotive Electrical Technology, Engineering – Mechanical Trade, and Engineering – Fabrication Trade, along with Restricted Electrical and High Risk Work Licences and a range of industry tickets, while completing my Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

My approach to assessment is practical, fair and straightforward. I understand that people develop their skills through different pathways and that years of workplace experience don’t always fit neatly on paper. My goal is to provide candidates with a clear understanding of the process and a fair opportunity to demonstrate their existing skills and experience.

For me, assessment is about recognising genuine trade skills, maintaining industry standards and helping experienced tradespeople gain recognition for the skills they’ve developed throughout their careers.

I believe that practical experience is one of the most valuable things a tradesperson can bring to their profession. My role is to assess the knowledge, skills and experience candidates have developed throughout their careers, helping ensure their abilities are fairly and accurately evaluated against Australian industry standards.

At Trade Skills Australia, I conduct Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) skills assessments, working with both Australian and international candidates. This includes reviewing evidence, conducting technical interviews and competency conversations, and assessing whether candidates meet the requirements of their nominated trade.

I understand that every tradesperson has a different background, and that years of hands-on experience don’t always translate easily into paperwork. My approach is practical, thorough and straightforward. I take the time to understand each candidate’s experience, explain the assessment requirements clearly and provide a fair opportunity for them to demonstrate their skills.

For me, being an assessor is about more than reviewing documents and ticking boxes. It’s about recognising genuine industry experience while maintaining the quality and integrity of Australian trade qualifications.

At Trade Skills Australia, my goal is to ensure every candidate receives a professional, transparent and supportive assessment experience. I take pride in helping experienced tradespeople demonstrate their capabilities and take the next step towards achieving their career goals.
